SBA recognizes Weston

The U.S. Small Business Administration presented its Dwight D. Eisenhower Award of Excellence to Roy F. Weston, Inc. of West Chester, PA. The award recognizes Weston's "outstanding record of providing subcontracts to small businesses" in the construction category. William L. Robertson, Weston's chief executive, received the award in Washington, D.C. He remarked, "Originally founded as a small business 44 years ago, Weston has always supported the SB community because we recognize that it makes good business sense. We have an ongoing SB mentoring program and sponsor job fairs around the country to recruit top-notch specialty firms."

"Engineering Excellence" for H2M Group

The Gold Award of the American Consulting Engineers Council in the category of Water and Wastewater was given to H2M for design and construction of a water treatment plant to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and iron from well drinking water. H2M's client was the West Hempstead Water District on Long Island. The dual treatment facility includes air stripping for VOC removal and pressure filtration for iron removal—a groundbreaking treatment combination. The facility, additionally, is fully automated and can operate without personnel around the clock. The design also allows for future expansion of the district. Start-up and testing of the facility were completed in the spring.

Louis A. Saulino, PE been promoted to vice president at the H2M Group. He is director of the company's transportation and civil engineering division. Saulino has 30 years' experience in civil, site, and transportation engineering and is licensed in New York and New Jersey. His current job portfolio includes major highway and bridge construction and inspection on Long Island.

Dawn Foster joins BBL board

Dawn S. Foster, PE has been appointed to the board of directors of Blasland, Bouck & Lee, Inc. She was one of the original members of BBL when it formed 16 years ago. Foster will continue her duties with the firm's sediment group in addition to the new board responsibilities.

Foster holds a B.S. in civil engineering and a B.S. in Forest Engineering. She has more then 20 years' experience related to Superfund, RCRA, the Toxic Substances Control Act, and the Clean Water Act. She is a licensed engineer in New York, Wisconsin, and Ohio. In addition her work at BBL, Foster is a member of the advisory board for Syracuse University's L.C. Smith School of Computer Science and engineering.

Hazen and Sawyer Environmental Engineers & Scientists have made several promotions. Paul Pitt is now a vice president in the New York City office, Bruce Pierstorff in the Fairfax office, and Mark Bishop and Benjamin Roach in the Raleigh office. Robert J. Kukenberger at CDM

NYWEA member Robert J. Kukenberger, PE, has joined CDM's Syracuse office as an associate. He has over 25 years' experience directing water and wastewater projects throughout the U.S. including an 80-mgd plan upgrade for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and a wastewater treatment plant automation program for Westchester County.

Kukenberger has a master's degree in civil and environmental engineering and is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineering. He is licensed in Florida, Michigan, New York, Ohio, and Virginia.

In a field of 8500 candidates, O'Brien & Gere Engineers was named one of just thirty-four 1999 winners of the "Partners in Excellence" award. The award is made by Miller to suppliers based on their quality, service, and cost competitiveness. Each winner, according to Miller, "surpasses our expectations." O'Brien & Gere provides environmental compliance assistance and site management services for Miller. According to Martin J. Costello, Miller's vice-president-corporate engineering, "The employees at O'Brien & Gere have continuously provided Miller with world-class products and services."

An on-line environmental health and safety compliance management and recordkeeping system is available through EcoLogic Systems. This web site was developed to provide school districts, colleges, building owners, property managers, and public agencies a place to post their USEPA and OSHA compliance programs and to store environmental information for their properties. According to EcoLogic, the site manages information on, for example, asbestos, lead-based paint, indoor air quality, and hazardous materials inventories for multiple properties. It can also stores information about planned and completed projects and track reoccurring building maintenance and compliance events on a building-specific or system-wide basis.

The web site uses and underlying database in FileMaker Pro, and it posts its privacy policy prominently. The site requires registration for use.

Call for papers—collection systems

The Water Environment Federation is accepting abstracts of papers to be considered for presentation at "2001 a collection systems odyssey: Integrating O&M and wet weather solutions." This specialty conference will be held July 8-11, 2001 in Bellvue, Washington. The conference will examine approaches to issues of efficiency and effectiveness in the design, operation, maintenance, and management of sewer collection systems while focusing on environmental effects. It will provide a forum for discussing topics related to all sizes of utility wastewater and storm water collection systems. Abstracts with specific performance data will be favored. ASCE offers learning online

The new online university of the American Society of Civil Engineers offers more than 700 continuing education courses - available day or night through the Internet. ASCE is teaming with Element K (formerly Ziff-Davis Education Company). Subscribers pay one fee and have access to any number of courses for 12 months. Additionally, an online library is available, and students can share knowledge through online lounges and live chat rooms.

In addition to continuing education, ASCE has developed nine full courses together with KeepSmart Engineering. Topics include NPDES Phase II, wetlands mitigation, storm water financing, and storm water management. Enrollment is available through the ACED web site:

New executive roles at O'Brien & Gere

A new executive team will lead O'Brien & Gere, Inc. of North America—the O'Brien & Gere company that now consolidates the firm's construction, operations, and international initiatives into one organization. Peter W. McMaster, PE has been elected chairman and president. Donald E. Stone, Jr., PE has been elected chief executive officer, and James A. Fox, PE has been elected chief operating officer. Under the direction of this new leadership team, O'Brien & Gere, Inc. of North America is the organization from which O'Brien & Gere clients access construction, operations, project management, and start-up services both in the U.S. and abroad.
