P2 info for metal finishers

by Mindy Gampel

The National Metal Finishing Strategic Goals Program (SGP) is a voluntary program that encourages companies to go beyond environmental compliance. SGP member companies are offered incentives, resources, and a means for removing regulatory and policy barriers as they work to achieve specific environmental goals. The program was started in 1998 as a unique cooperative effort between the USEPA and the metal finishing industry, represented by the National Association of Metal Finishers (NAMF), American Electroplaters and Surface Finishers Society (AESF), Metal Finishing Suppliers Association (MFSA), and Surface Finishing Industry Council (SFIC). The SGP web site is a great resource for pollution prevention tips, tools, and web links. These resources are collected from across the nation, and will help facilities to meet the SGP environmental goals.

Benchmarking Metal Finishing Report — This study will allow metal finishers to gain a better understanding of their overall performance on a process-by-process basis and gain a better idea of how they compare to other finishers using similar process lines. Additionally, the study provides data on best practices for specific processes. To order contact Cindi Bousley at 734-995-3075.

The National Metal Finishing Resource Center (NMFRC) is an Internet-based organization that was established in 1995 under a program jointly funded by the Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and USEPA. Industry partners include AESF, NAMF, and MFSA. The NMFRC is a comprehensive environmental, technical, and pollution prevention metal finishing resource available worldwide.
Click here to visit the web site of NMFRC.

Key NMFRC features include:

  • A searchable technical database containing over 5000 articles, papers, and reports covering metal finishing process and pollution control topics
  • Environmental compliance assistance tools, including full-text regulations
  • Late-breaking directives and interpretations from USEPA and states
  • Specifications (with index) used in metal finishing
  • Shop, supplier, and people directories containing over 6000 entries
  • Interactive features where users can quickly obtain reliable information from industry experts
  • On-line calculators designed for finishing needs.

USEPA has instituted a new program, the Environmental Technology Verification Program (ETV) to confirm the performance of innovative technical solutions to problems that threaten human health or the environment. ETV was created to accelerate the entrance of new environmental technologies to the domestic and international marketplace. ETV verifies commercial-ready private sector technologies through twelve pilots.
