Cooper Crouse-Hinds Receives
New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA) Award

(Syracuse, NY) Cooper Crouse-Hinds of Syracuse, NY is the recipient of the Industrial Achievement Award from the New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA). The NYWEA is a statewide nonprofit organization of water quality management professionals with 2,100 members and seven regional chapters. The award recognizes a corporate commitment to meet environmental water quality and management goals, and was formally announced during NYWEA’s annual meeting recently held in New York City.

The NYWEA commended Cooper Crouse-Hinds for its reduction of process water usage from 21 million gallons to 10.5 million gallons since 1992. The amount of hazardous waste generated at the site has been similarly reduced from 195 tons of waste in 1992 to 142 tons in 2001. Among the company’s other initiatives the NYWEA cites are: construction of a new wastewater treatment plant and installation of above-ground pump stations and lines in 1994; installation of a system in 2000 so that the wastewater treatment plant reduced magnesium hydroxide usage; the addition of equipment in 1998 to decrease sludge and chemical usage by 25 percent; and, placement of covers on all outside scrap metal, trash and storage containers to prevent storm water contact.
