NEWS RELEASE Release Date: March 13, 2002 City of Fulton Receives (Syracuse, NY) The City of Fulton, NY is the recipient of the Public Education Award from the New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA). The NYWEA is a statewide nonprofit organization of water quality management professionals with 2,100 members and seven regional chapters. The award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to public education, was formally announced during the organizations annual meeting held recently in New York City. Fulton, as part of its public awareness program in the field of wastewater, conducts tours each year at its wastewater treatment plant for elementary schools in the city. Prior to these tours of the plant and its laboratory, teachers are provided movies that facilitate discussions on the basic needs and operations of a wastewater treatment plant. Tours are also conducted for students of Cayuga Community College in Fulton. Follow-up presentations are offered in classrooms at the request of teachers. The Oswego County BOCES Program also works together with the city to provide hand-on work experience in the field for teenagers year-round. These part-time student workers are held to the same standards and safety requirements as full-time employees. They are trained in everyday operations and assist in general plant maintenance, helping them gain education in general wastewater treatment operations. ###
