Joel A. Miele, Sr. of Queens, NY Receives
New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA) Award

(Syracuse, NY) Joel A. Miele, Sr., P.E., of Queens, NY is the recipient of the annual John Chester Brigham Award from the New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA). The NYWEA is a statewide nonprofit organization of water quality management professionals with 2,100 members and seven regional chapters. The award, which recognizes outstanding service within the organization, was formerly announced during the organization’s annual meeting held February 4-6 in New York City.

Miele, who serves as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, has been an active member and major supporter of the NYWEA since 1994. He has been a featured speaker at the NYWEA’s statewide annual meeting, as well as other events sponsored by the Lower Hudson and Metropolitan chapters. He was a driving force in establishing NYWEA’s new Municipal Institution Membership category and has encouraged active participation by the NYCDEP staff. Miele has been an enthusiastic supporter of the organization’s Operators Challenge competition both statewide and on a national level with the Water Environment Federation.

Miele is a professional engineer and professional planner licensed in New York, and holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of New York. As NYCDEP commissioner, Miele is responsible for the country’s largest water and sewage agency, overseeing a staff of 6,000 involved in world-class engineering projects. He is a Fellow and Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a past president of the NYS Society of Professional Engineers. He has held various leadership positions in professional and civic organizations including chair of Queens Community Board #10, and the Board of Peninsula Hospital Center. He was past president and trustee of the Queens Borough Public Library. He and his wife, Josephine, have three children and seven grandchildren.
