City of Salamanca Receives
New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA) Award

(Syracuse, NY) The City of Salamanca, NY is the recipient of the Beneficial Use of Biosolids Award from the New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA). The NYWEA is a statewide nonprofit organization of water quality management professionals with 2,100 members and seven regional chapters. The award recognizes significant contributions in the development and implementation of cost-effective, safe and publicly acceptable biosolids use practices, and was formally announced during NYWEA’s annual meeting recently held in New York City.

The Salamanca Board of Public Utilities began recycling biosolids, a treated sludge end-product, from its wastewater treatment plant in 1984 following the closing of its municipal landfill. Biosolids field applications are calculated on the nitrogen requirements of the crop to be grown. Considerable effort has been made in keeping the farmers, landowners and neighbors satisfied with the process. It has been advantageous to all concerned because the sewer users have an economical means of disposal without chemical addition; the farmers have decreased commercial fertilizer costs and increased yields; and, the landowner achieves organic soil enrichment. The environment wins overall because if it were not for biosolids recycling, the material would be using valuable landfill space that should be reserved for true waste products.
