NEWS RELEASE Release Date: March 13, 2002 Westchester County Receives (Syracuse, NY) Westchester County is the recipient of the Municipal Achievement Award from the New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA). The NYWEA is a statewide nonprofit organization of water quality management professionals with 2,100 members and seven regional chapters. The award recognizes effective management of the environment particularly dealing with water resources and was formally announced during NYWEAs annual meeting recently held in New York City. Westchester County, through a number of initiatives, effectively oversees and protects its water environment. The county owns and operates seven wastewater treatment plants, and wastewater in excess of 150 million-gallons-per-day is collected, treated, and discharged to either the Hudson River or Long Island Sound. The county has implemented Performance Maintenance Programs at each treatment plant as well as upgraded computer programming to improve operating efficiencies and reduce equipment failures. In addition, Westchester County is implementing a new sewer system rehabilitation program, and is maximizing solid waste recycling through a number of programs. By doing this, it has reduced the amount to be disposed by nearly 60 percent. The county also operates seven household clean-up days each year to help residents dispose of their hazardous waste products. A new initiative also further regulates the application and use of pesticides to protect Long Island Sound, the Hudson River and drinking water supplies by controlling non-point runoff. ###
