The NYWEA is a statewide nonprofit organization of water quality management professionals with 2,100 members and seven regional chapters. The award recognizes effective management of the environment particularly dealing with water resources and was formally announced during NYWEAs annual meeting recently held in New York City. The Albany County Sewer District provides cost-effective wastewater treatment from its North and South plants for its eight-member communities that include the cities of Albany, Cohoes, Watervliet; the villages of Colonie, Green Island and Menands; and parts of the towns of Colonie and Guilderland. On an average day the district successfully treats 45 million gallons of wastewater, and has received a number of awards already for its excellent operations. Albany County also has helped to protect a source of drinking water by getting involved and encouraging the treatment of propylene glycol running off from deicing operations at Albany County International Airport. It has also led in solids handling, cooperating with a local landfill on blending certain biosolids with compost resulting in an excellent nutrient material for agricultural land application. ###
