NY Water Environment Association’s 74th Annual Meeting Feb. 4-6:
Disaster Preparedness & Water Sustainability Topics

(Syracuse, NY) The New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA) will hold its 74th Annual Meeting February 4-6, 2002, attracting over 1,000 water environment experts from across the state and nation to New York City to discuss such timely issues as disaster preparedness, water sustainability, biosolids use and water pollution control. The keynote speaker will be William Bertera, executive director of the Water Environment Federation, an international organization of water quality/environmental experts. Bertera will join NYWEA president, David N. Ellis, and government representatives, Kathleen Callahan, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and NG Kaul, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, at opening ceremonies to begin at 9:15 a.m., Monday, February 4th, at the New York Marriott Marquis. Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-26th District) will be presented the 2001 NYWEA Nelson A. Rockefeller Award for his environmental legislative efforts.

The three-day program includes environmental experts sharing their expertise and research relating to the theme, "Sustainable Management of Water," with participants at 17 informational sessions. Experts from federal and state emergency agencies, including FEMA, Corps of Engineers, NYS Department of Health and New York City Port Authority, will present a Wednesday afternoon (Feb.6) Disaster Preparedness workshop on facilities’ operations and security, exploring both terrorist attacks and natural disasters, as well as new procedures being considered.

Water and wastewater operator certification is offered with attendance to designated technical sessions. The conference also includes a Wednesday Awards Luncheon recognizing NYWEA members who have demonstrated exemplary professionalism and service.

NYWEA is a statewide, nonprofit educational/technical organization of water quality management professionals that promotes clean water programs and related issues. Founded in 1929, today the organization has more than 2,100 members representing diverse backgrounds and specialties concerned with enhancing and protecting precious water resources. Headquartered in Syracuse, NY, the NYWEA has seven regional chapters, 11 college chapters and is an affiliate of the international Water Environment Federation.
