Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator – Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma.

Duties: Trainee will undergo on-the-job training to be a qualified operator of a Grade 1A Wastewater Treatment Plant; assists in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.

Salary: Commensurate based on experience or licensed operator.

All applicants will need to take the Civil Service Test being held in Lyons.  Applications for this test must be submitted to the Wayne County Civil Service Office, Lyons New York, along with their fee of $5.00.

Typical Work Activities:

Performs study and reading assignments, observes demonstrations and otherwise learns the techniques of operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant; Learns and assists in the operation and adjustment of pumps, valves, screens and related mechanical equipment; Learns and assists in the inspection, maintenance and repair of pumps, valves, screen and related mechanical equipment; Learns and assists in the making of tests to determine chlorine residual; Learns and assists in the preparation and maintenance of activity records and reports; Performs increasingly responsible duties as assigned in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.

Familiarity with elementary principles of chemistry and general science; good general intelligence; good knowledge of basic mathematics; working knowledge of safety practices and procedures; mechanical aptitude; ability to learn principals and procedures relating to operation and maintenance of a water and wastewater treatment plant; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; dependability; tact and courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
