Scholarship Application Tips:

2024 NYWEA Scholarship Application for High School Seniors

High School Seniors may apply for Major ​​Scholarships (the Environmental Career Scholarship & Nicholas J. Bartilucci Scholarship), the General High School Scholarship and Child of Member Scholarship on one application (check all that apply on your application form). 

Application & Supporting Document Checklist for High School Seniors 

Completed application form you must answer the first two essay questions for all scholarships, and the third scholarship for the Major Scholarships. Be sure to initial the last page.

  1. High school transcript 
  2. College transcript (if applicable​)
  3. Two letters of recommendation: At least one of the two recommendations MUST be from a Science or Math Teacher. No recommendations can be from relatives. Only two letters will be reviewed by the committee. 

2024 NYWEA Scholarship Application for College Students​

College Students may apply for the College Student Chapter Scholarship and/or Child of Member Scholarship on one application (check all that apply on your application form). ​​​​

NG Kaul Memor​ial Scholarship for Graduate Students 

Completed application for​m – you must answer the two essay questions & initial the last page.

Graduate Students pursuing graduate or doctoral degrees in environmental/civil engineering or environmental science concentrating on water quality, who show a commitment to government service may apply for this scholarship.

  • Two (2) requested essays (see page 2 of the PDF form), essays must be typed.
  • Letters of recommendation (minimum of two)
  • Official transcript
  • Your resume or C.V.

Jim Anderson Memorial Scholarship

Applicants must be enrolled in a BS or BE full-time engineering program with a focus on environmental issues, particularly water/wastewater in the New York City Metro Area. 

  1. Fill out the entire application form  
  2. Letter verifying enrollment or acceptance in a New York Metro Area undergraduate or graduate environmental program on college stationary.
  3. Attach Letters of Recommendation (two).
  4. Attach an official transcript.
  5. Attach requested essays (two).
  6. Submit your completed application no later than February 29 at 5 PM. Awards will be announced by June 30th.

Lucy Grassano Memorial Scholarship 

This scholarship is named after Lucy Grassano, who was a Principal Administrative Assistant at NYCDEP. She was a mentor, friend, teacher, and “mother” to many operations staff throughout the years. Everyone needs a coach, it is in this spirit, that these scholarships are granted in her name. 

This scholarship is offered each year to one certified operator from each of NYWEA’s chapters to subsidize the cost of attending the NYWEA Annual Meeting.

Brian Romeiser Precertification Scholarship 

NYWEA is offering scholarships to individuals working in New York State to pay for pre-certification training towards wastewater operator certification! Pre-Certification training includes Basic Operations, Basic Laboratory, Activated Sludge, the Supervisory and Technical Module, and Grade 4 Management. Ten scholarships of up to $1,000 each will be awarded throughout the year; five (5) in the Spring and five (5) in the Fall. Scholarship reimbursements will be made to the training facility of their choice or directly to the individual after successful completion of the course within a 12 month period. The deadline for the Fall application period is November 1, 2024.

Avril D. Woodhead Grit Scholarship 

NYWEA’s newest scholarship program is the Avril D. Woodhead Grit Scholarship. This scholarship is for persons 17 or older who identify as female or nonbinary, and have demonstrated grit as shown through maintaining effort and interest despite setbacks as they work towards their goals, and are interested in, or already participating in, a STEM field. This can include, but is not limited to: operators, engineers, field staff, accountants, HR, administrators, scientists or other organizational functions that advance the protection of our environment. This scholarship was created in Dr. Avril D. Woodhead’s name, as she exemplified the characteristics of grit in both her personal and professional life.
